Travel adivsory for Malaysia

24 February 2016

The United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand have warned against non-essential travel to islands off the coast of eastern Sabah, Malaysia, including the offshore islands and dive sites, due to the risk of kidnapping.

There is a heightened threat of terrorism in Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur and other major cities, the advisories warn. “Malaysian authorities have made a number of arrests of persons allegedly involved in planning attacks, including against entertainment venues in Kuala Lumpur,” the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said.

Travellers visiting Malaysia are advised to be vigilant at all times, particularly in public places and areas frequented by expatriates and Westerners.
