Niger: Travellers to Niger warned to be on high alert

The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all but essential travel to key areas in Niger, including the capital, Niamey.

There is a high threat of terrorism, kidnapping and retaliatory attacks in the country due to its participation in the French-led intervention in Mali and due to Niger’s involvement in the regional fight against Boko Haram.

A state of emergency was declared on March 3 in the Diffa region, Ouliam, Ayorou, Bankilare, Abala, the Tillaberi region and Tahoua region because of the rise in terror attacks.
