A tsunami warning has been issued for the whole of the Pacific ocean following the powerful quake (Picture: US Tsunami Warning System) A tsunami alert has been issued for the United States after a huge earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska. People were woken by shaking buildings as the magnitude 8.2 quake struck, lasting for well over a minute, according to witnesses. The quake had a depth of just 12 miles when it struck 175 miles to the east of Kodiak, Alaska, at 1.38am local time (9.38am GMT). A tsunami alert has been issued for the Pacific Ocean, including all of the US west coast. People are being alerted to the danger by text messages.
